E-commerce and AI: Our First Revenue from ChatGPT Traffic

Since November, we've been seeing a curious trend in our client’s analytics: a steady trickle of referral traffic from ChatGPT. In our meeting in January, we highlighted it to them and recommended that they think about it when planning their content.

In February, something interesting happened. We saw their first real revenue generated directly from traffic referred by the AI chatbot.

Yes, you read that right. ChatGPT is driving sales.

We haven't yet had the chance to analyse the data and map out the customer journey. We need to understand how these customers ended up on our client’s online shop through ChatGPT, what they're looking for, and why they're converting. But even without that detailed analysis, one thing is clear: AI is ready to play an important role in driving e-commerce sales.

The Big Question: How Do We Capitalise on It?

This development has opened up many possibilities for us as an agency. We're now asking ourselves: How can we use this to our clients’ advantage? How can we channel the power of AI to drive even more traffic and sales for them?

We don't have all the answers yet. But here are some of the questions we're exploring:

  • Content Optimisation: How can we optimise our clients’ content to be more discoverable through AI-powered search and recommendations?
  • AI-Powered Marketing: Can we use AI to create personalised marketing campaigns that interest users coming from sources like ChatGPT?
  • Enhanced Customer Experience: How can we use AI to create a seamless and engaging customer journey from initial discovery to purchase?
  • Strategic Partnerships: Should we be considering partnerships with AI platforms to tap into their user base? Is the opportunity open to us?
  • Understanding the Intent: How are people using ChatGPT to find products and services, what are the prompts they are using?

AI is not just a trend, but a major shift in how people find and buy products online. And we're committed to staying ahead of the curve despite our miniature size.
